I remembered when we used to impart IEC (information, education and communication)training on Swarna Jayati Gram Swaraj Yojana in regards with formation of self help groups in the DHGC area under DRD Cell Darjeeling at Pudun g Farm under ATRE,later CMD of Yusuf Simick and team 25 years ago. Mr. Yusuf Simick had invited Mr. Michele Frost, leader of eco-tourism of USA and all the hoteliers were present on the workshop and interaction programme with Michele Frost. During the course of discourse Mr Frost asked the hotel and travel industry the stakeholders of Kalimpong present what products related to hotel and travel industry which they are ready to buy or avail for the travellers . All the stakeholders present replied that we run hotel with such and such number of rooms for guests' stay. He advised that travelers do not come for lodging inside concrete building or jungle but their travelling intention are vivid and vast like people and language, religion and society, historical monuments, landscape and wildlife, sacred architecture, secular architectures, vernacular architecture, hindu mythology, great epics, classical music and dance, costumes of India, foods and social ritual etc . These are the real product of tourism industry which are to be fostered so that tourism industry become prism to know our places.
Recent 3 days street food festival organized by the initiative of some dyanamic youths of Kalimpong town ended with great fanfare on 22 May 2022 night held at Kalimpong Town Main Road. The local residents crowded enjoying various veg. and non-veg foods listening the music at the venue. I saw a very few outside tourists were seen due to lack of proper information and advertisement. I I felt that there should be tourism annual calendar should be published and advance advertisement in social and digital media to be done so as to attract the tourists . Notwithstanding, this street food festival certainly bring positive vibes in Attithi Devo Bhavo philosophy of Indian rich culture..
Recently I happened to visit one of my relative's Hallam ceremony at Demapur during Christmas month December where I found that whole festive month the local naga tribal indigenous youths organized authenticate food festival on the street of Demapur whole december month in the evening time attracting a lot of tourists going to hornbill festival. We have to adopt a lot from festivals of festival of northeast viz.Cul hornbill festival of Kohima on the theme "Culturally Yours", Zero Music festival etc. so as to our tourism industry promote. The silent valley of Kalimpong is always a torch bearer in any field.
